START Code of Ethics

The START Member shall safeguard the right to privacy, by judiciously protecting information of a confidential nature. The START Team members primary, obligation is to respect the integrity, of and continue to promote the welfare of the individual(s), whether the individual(s) is (are) assisted individually or in a group relationship. In group situations, the member is also responsible for taking reasonable precautions to protect individuals from physical and or psychological trauma resulting from new interactions within that group setting.

The START Member shall remain cognizant of changing interpersonal dynamics. When an individual(s) condition indicates that there is clear and imminent danger to that person or others, the team member must take reasonable personal action to address this situation immediately. The notification of appropriate support personnel is tantamount. Consultation utilizing internal START colleagues continues to be a strong internal asset and is therefore recommended as an initial response option.

The START Member shall recognize the boundaries of their own competence and provide only those support services endorsed by the START Team for which they are qualified by training or by experience either individually or as a group. It is understood that each and every, individual member of the team brings a unique and important component to the overall process. This process remains a team approach as we individuals continue to compliment each other's strengths and weaknesses.

The START Member does not condone or engage in sexual harassment that is defined deliberate or repeated comments, gestures, or physical contacts of a sexual nature. Furthermore, members shall not practice, condone or facilitate any form of discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, age, religion, national origin, marital status, political belief, mental or physical challenge, or any other preference or personal characteristic, condition or status. The START Team member shall treat other members with respect and courtesy.

The START Member has a responsibility both to the individual(s) who is (are) served and to the START as an agency, within which services is offered. The member shall maintain high standards of conduct. We recognize that the member influences the development of the START Team by' continuous efforts to interact with professional and paraprofessional practices, teaching in-services, continuing education conferences, and other research activities. This growth is continuous throughout the member's affiliation with the START Team and is exemplified by the development of a philosophy that explains how and why a member functions in the helping relationship.

The START Member shall be cognizant of interdisciplinary dialogue on their effectiveness and be guided by these findings. Team members shall remain accountable to each other and to the team while in the performance of our mutual agency, goals. Team members will not exploit START Team relationships or contacts for personal gain or to further their own interests outside of or apart from the scope and effort deemed consistent with purposes of our team.

The START Member shall work in collaboration to secure and provide appropriate information to individual(s) and/or agencies regarding the extent, the nature of services and the focus of our team efforts in conjunction with any requests for assistance to that said agency. START Team members will not misrepresent or misinform the public. Although members will act to ensure that all appropriate persons/agencies have access to our services and or resources, this information is geared toward those front line agencies and not toward the public domain.
