"Your coordination and willingness to
assist fellow peers in the aftermath of the crash aided
the Kentucky Community Crisis Response Team (KCCRT) in
the provision of timely support services. On behalf of
KCCRT I wish to express our gratitude to you for
assisting us in supporting the aeromedical community
through the provision of personnel, willing to give of
themselves to support their peers during a time of great
loss and grief."
Renelle Grubs
Executive Director, KCCRT
The START team is a nationwide response team dedicated
to providing Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)
interventions to those associated with specialized
transport teams and airborne law enforcement.
The team is made up of trained peers and mental
health professionals. The peers are comprised of flight
nurses, flight paramedics, pilots, airborne law
enforcement officers, communication specialists and
mechanics. In addition to our peer team members, all our
mental health professionals have participated in air
medical training and experiences.
START for CISM is registered with the International
Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF). There are
currently over 350 CISM teams worldwide registered with
ICISF. In addition to training thousands of individuals
both nationally and internationally, ICISF has trained
CISM teams for the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air
Force, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and
Firearms. ICISF has also trained CISM teams for the
following commercial airlines: Delta, TWA, Aloha,
Southwest, Northwest and American. Both the FAA’s Air
Traffic Controllers and the Association of Flight
Attendants have trained CISM teams registered with ICISF.
In August, 1997 ICISF was granted full consultive status
with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
START for CISM requires all of its members to
complete the minimum training standards outlined under
section V of the ICISF team registry packet. In
addition, START for CISM and its members adhere to
the “ICISF Model” (formerly “Mitchell Model”) for
interventions and team management structure as outlined
in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing: An Operations
Manual for the Prevention of Traumatic Stress Among
Emergency Services and Disaster Workers” (Everly/Mitchell)
and the “Critical Incident Stress Management: The Basic
Course Workbook” (Everly/Mitchell).
"As [a member] of the Air & Surface
Transport Nurses Association (ASTNA)... I would like to
offer our full support to the START for CISM team. A
CISM response team, dedicated to the unique needs of the
transport industry is long overdue."
